Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Argentina

Departure day, where you will fly to Buenos Aires with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Buenos Aires

We will be met in the airport arrival hall by a driver who will accompany us to our hotel in the centre of Buenos Aires. The city is known as South America’s answer to Paris on account of its broad boulevards, charming quarters and magnificent buildings. The atmosphere here is magnificent, with charming café lifestyle, the pulsating beat of the metropolis and melancholy tango culture. We will be spending three nights in this wonderful city, so there will be plenty of time to visit the different areas and soak up the ambience.

Overnight stay: Hotel Merit San Telmo

Day 3: Tour of Buenos Aires

This morning, we will be collected at our hotel and then whisked away on a traditional tour of the highlights of Buenos Aires: La Boca – the old workers’ quarter, where the buildings are painted in a variety of bright colours; San Telmo – the oldest part of the city and now the artists’ domain; 9 de Julio Avenida – the broadest boulevard in the world, with its famous Obelisco monument; Puerto Madero – the new harbour area, liberally sprinkled with chic cafés and restaurants; Corrientes Avenida – the entertainment area, packed with theatres and cinemas; Teatro Colón – the beautiful opera house; and Recoleta – the famous churchyard, which is the resting place of Eva Perón, better known as Evita.

In the evening, we will have the chance to experience an unforgettable tango show. After a traditional Argentine dinner, the show begins with melancholy tango rhythms and then proceeds to present fantastic singers and musicians, along with the marvellous tango dancers. It is a magnificent show of the very highest quality.

Overnight stay: Hotel Merit San Telmo

Day 4: Buenos Aires

The day is yours to do with as you wish, so you have plenty of time to explore the delights of Buenos Aires for yourself.

Overnight stay: Hotel Merit San Telmo

However, there are several Buenos Aires tours to choose from:

Day 5: By plane from Buenos Aires to Trelew

It is now time to bid farewell to the Argentine capital and fly south to Trelew, where we will be met at the airport and driven to Puerto Madryn. The drive from the airport to the hotel takes 1–1½ hours. The town, which is a small port, is an ideal base for excursions to the Peninsula Valdes. If you take a walk down to the harbour, you may be lucky enough to spot seals swimming alongside the big ships.

Overnight stay: Hotel Tolosa

Day 6: Peninsula Valdes

Today we have the pleasure of a full-day tour to Peninsula Valdes, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. It is a fantastic area with a rich variety of fauna. We drive to different places on the peninsula to see the enormous sea elephants, sea lions, seals and sea birds. Visitors who come in the period June–December can even go on a whale safari (for an extra charge), to see giant killer whales, for example, right up close.

Overnight stay: Hotel Tolosa

Day 7: By plane from Trelew to El Calafate

We leave the peninsula behind and head off farther to the south-west towards El Calafate, where more nature treats await us. El Calafate is located near the border with Chile and close to Lago Argentino lake, whose waters are almost turquoise in colour. The charming town enjoys a magnificent location, nestling among the mighty Andes mountains.

Overnight stay: Hotel Koi Aiken

Day 8: Perito Moreno glacier

The whole of the day is devoted to a tour to Perito Moreno, the awe-inspiring glacier. We drive past Lago Argentino, where we can admire the rich bird life. If we are lucky, we even may spot some pink flamingos. The tour continues over the Patagonian plains until we reach the Los Glaciares national park, which is home to remarkable flora, including the distinctive Chilean fire bush. The impressive glacier is 60 metres high and 4 km long. It is visible from a great distance and we will stop at several vantage points along the way before reaching the glacier itself. Right up close, we can hear the loud crashes huge chunks of ice make when they fall off the active glacier and tumble into the lake. It is an impressive sight, so it is no surprise that the national park has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Overnight stay: Hotel Koi Aiken

Day 9: El Calafate

The day is yours to do with as you wish. For example, you can relax in the town itself and enjoy the delightful surroundings, or, if you have not yet had your fill of impressive natural ice formations, you can take another full-day tour to three other glaciers in the region: Upsala, Onelli and Spegazzinni. The excursion involves taking a sailing tour and then hiking to the glaciers. The tour costs £155 per person. Lunch is not included in the price.

Overnight stay: Hotel Koi Aiken

Day 10: By plane from El Calafate to Puerto Iguazu

It is now time to leave Patagonia behind and chart a course for Puerto Iguazu, which is located in the north of Argentina, close to the borders with Paraguay and Brazil. Puerto Iguazu itself is around 20 km from the waterfalls themselves. However, we will be staying at a small lodge in the rainforest, approx. 6–7 km outside the town.

Overnight stay: Hotel La Cantera

Day 11: Iguazu Falls

The Iguazu Falls are the biggest in the world and consist of 275 falls of various sizes along a 2.7 km stretch of the Iguazu river. Many of the waterfalls merge together, sending water crashing down over the cliffs, which form the shape of a horseshoe and tower up to a height of 85 metres. Although perhaps not as famous as Niagara Falls in North America the Iguazu Falls are both bigger and more impressive. The volume of water flowing through Niagara is an impressive 2.8 million litres per second, but this is dwarfed by the flow at Iguazu, which reaches a staggering 6.5 million litres per second. It is said that when she saw Iguazu for the first time, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt blurted: “Niagara is just a dripping tap …” Iguazu is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Today, we will be visiting the Argentine side, where we can cross walkways to the most impressive section of the falls, to look down into Garganta del Diablo (the Devil’s Throat). We continue our wonderful tour of the waterfalls along paths and bridges. The rainforest around the falls is home to a unique range of flora and fauna, including orchids, all kinds of birds and giant lizards.

Overnight stay: Hotel La Cantera

Day 12: Waterfalls and start of the journey home

Before starting our tour back to the UK, there is just time to visit the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls. We cross the bridge that links the Argentine town of Puerto Iguazu and the Brazilian town of Foz do Iguazu. Following a mandatory customs check, we continue on our way into the national park. Most of the waterfalls are on the Argentine side, but the view is best from the Brazilian side, as it provides many different angles from which to view the falls. For example, there is a lift up to a viewing platform that provides a fantastic perspective on the Devil’s Throat – enshrouded in the mist from the falls themselves. On the paths, we also have a good chance of spotting the small ring-tailed coati, inquisitively following in our footsteps.

After the visit, it is time to head for the airport in Foz do Iguazu to catch our flight to Sao Paulo. We then change planes here and continue on our way back to Europe.

Day 13: Return tour

Return flight to the UK.
