Drake Bay Wilderness Resort

Drake Bay Wilderness Resort enjoys a wonderful location overlooking Drake Bay and is surrounded by lush rainforest that brims with life. Exotic animals such as playful monkeys, curious coati and colourful toucans are frequent visitors to the resort.

The Agujitas River flows into the bay right next to the resort, making it the ideal place to borrow a kayak and paddle off to explore the rainforest.

There are just 20 rooms here, all of which have a small terrace where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings or stargaze when the sun has gone down. The rooms are rustic but comfortable and clean and all offer en suite facilities and air conditioning.

The resort has its own restaurant, which serves a combination of local and international dishes made from ingredients largely grown in its own kitchen garden.

The small bar serves chilled drinks, cocktails and light snacks.

Finca Maresia

Situated in the middle of the lush rainforest at Drake Bay is the peaceful Finca Maresia hotel, just 1–2 kilometres from the beach and town. The hotel is like a lovely little oasis after a day filled with exciting experiences.

Its eight pleasant bungalows are located on small hills in the middle of the hotel’s hilly landscape and can each accommodate up to 4 people. All have ceiling fans, a safe, mosquito nets over the beds and an en suite bathroom with hair dryers and toiletries. Each bungalow also has a veranda with a couple of hammocks where you can relax after an action-packed day and enjoy the scenic surroundings. You may even be lucky to enough see parrots, toucans, hummingbirds or other exotic birds flying by.

You can also enjoy the surroundings from the lounge area and the restaurant on the large covered veranda where breakfast (included), lunch and dinner are served. Dinner is an experience in itself as the menu includes several dishes which are eaten with the other guests around a large table, offering ample opportunity to talk about the day’s experiences with each other. Please note that dinner must be booked during breakfast and is not included.

Hotel Arenal Montechiari

The cosy Hotel Arenal Montechiari is set in scenic surroundings and enjoys stunning views of the iconic Arenal volcano. The hotel is just a 5–10-minute walk from the centre of La Fortuna.

Its rooms are primarily made of wood and decorated in natural colours with green hues. All rooms have air conditioning, cable TV and a mini fridge as well as an en suite bathroom with a hair dryer. Each room also has its own small covered veranda with a couple of chairs where you can relax and enjoy the lush surroundings – and perhaps even spot a colourful butterfly or a hummingbird.

Your breakfast (included) is served in the hotel’s covered restaurant, which also offers great views of the green surroundings. Lunch and dinner can also be ordered here. In the middle of the hotel’s lush garden is the swimming pool, where you can take a dip or just relax on a sun lounger while enjoying the view of the impressive Arenal volcano.

Hotel Monte Real

Monte Real presents a magnificent view out over the Arenal volcano and enjoys a wonderful location close to the Burio River and a small area of forest where you can see iguanas, squirrels, sloths, frogs, colourful birds and enchanting butterflies. The hotel is just 200 metres from the centre of La Fortuna, with its enticing shops and restaurants.

The rooms are equipped with a TV, facilities for making coffee, air conditioning, WiFi, a refrigerator and a safe. They also have a separate bathroom with a hair dryer, and a terrace or a balcony overlooking the garden.

The hotel has a delightful pool area with recliners, perfect for relaxing, enjoying the verdant surroundings and listening to the varied noises of the forest.

Hotel Costa Verde

Hotel Costa Verde is a tropical Costa Rican paradise situated on a hill in lush green surroundings close to the world famous Manuel Antonio National Park.

A stay here is both a relaxing end to your tour and an exciting encounter with what can only be described as the life’s work of an ingenious man and a big boyhood dream come true. Because nestled among the bungalows and ordinary rooms are retired aeroplanes and train carriages that the owner of Costa Verde has converted into rooms and restaurants.

Hotel Costa Verde has 70 spacious rooms in total, all with private balconies from which you can enjoy stunning views of either the lush rainforest or the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The hotel’s slogan is “Still more monkeys than people”, and you really get to stay in lush surroundings in the midst of beautiful nature and wildlife.

All rooms are furnished with attractive, solid wood furniture and have air conditioning, cable TV, Wi-Fi, a safe, a fridge, a coffee maker, a kitchenette with a microwave and an en suite bathroom with a hair dryer.

The hotel has 3 pools where you can sunbathe and enjoy a refreshing dip. There are 2 pools for families with children, and 1 pool which is for guests over the age of 16 only.

Your breakfast (included) is served in the Anaconda restaurant, where you can enjoy your morning coffee with a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean. You can also have lunch here, and on the menu, you’ll find a wide selection of Costa Rican dishes, seafood, sandwiches and wraps.

The hotel also has 4 other restaurants and bars, each with its own theme. These restaurants are located along the main road and are also frequented by other travellers in Manuel Antonio.
The El Baguette Café has its own bakery and serves delicious sandwiches, cakes and coffee for lunch and afternoon tea.
In “El Wagon”, a converted train carriage, you can look forward to crisp pizzas, and in restaurant La Cantina there is BBQ and live music on the menu.
And be sure to visit the El Avión restaurant and bar. A real Fairchild C-123 aeroplane that once belonged to the CIA has been transformed into a bar and restaurant. Enjoy a colourful cocktail with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean followed by a delicious seafood dinner.

Costa Verde has always been at the forefront of sustainable solutions to take good care of the precious surrounding nature. Waste is sorted here, and anything that can be recycled is recycled, including rainwater and wood. One of the things that immediately catches your eye upon arrival is that all the lamps in the hotel are old bottles that have been given a new life.

Please note that the hotel is located on a hilltop in hilly terrain, so there will be quite a lot of stairs between the rooms and restaurants as well as down to the beach (about 700 metres) and the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park (about 2 km). A bus service runs several times an hour to/from Manuel Antonio if you don’t wish to walk there. The ride costs around 1 USD.

Hotel Naoz

The newly constructed and modern Hotel Naoz is like a little oasis in Manuel Antonio.

The hotel has only 25 rooms and is built around a small, lush garden with a swimming pool and spa bath in the middle. Here, you can relax in a sun lounger with a good book, or enjoy a cool drink, or a Costa Rican coffee from the hotel bar.

The hotels feature modern interiors with bright colours, tiled floors, and colourful pictures on the walls. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and an en suite bathroom with hair dryer and toiletries. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

Your included breakfast is also enjoyed at the hotel restaurant, which is also open for lunch and dinner. Here, the chefs stand ready in the open kitchen, preparing delectable local and international dishes.
If you would like to go out to eat, there are many exciting restaurants at a walking distance from the hotel. For example, you can visit the restaurant El Avion, which is an old aeroplane that was transported to the city and remodelled to become a spectacular restaurant.

If you want to feel the sand, Playa Espadilla, or visit the Manuel Antonio National Park, you can get on the local shuttle bus, which stops quite close to the hotel approx. once per hour. It takes about 10-15 minutes and is both an easy and cheap way to travel back and forth.

You can also go down the steep, winding mountain road down to the beach and simply take the shuttle bus back for the steep parts.

Arco Iris Lodge

Centrally located in the small village of Santa Elena in the area neighbouring Monteverde Cloud Forest is the cosy Arco Iris Lodge. When staying here, you are within easy reach of restaurants, cafés and small hikes in the beautiful nature.

The lodge’s rustic, wooden cabins are very much in harmony with the scenic surroundings. The simply appointed rooms have wooden furniture, a TV, a safe and an en suite bathroom There is free Wi-Fi at the lodge. The room’s cosy balcony is the perfect place to relax to the sound of the nearby animals and enjoy the view of the surrounding garden and mountains.

The day starts with a nice breakfast buffet with both European and Costa Rican dishes. Much of the produce comes from the lodge itself – including eggs from the lodge’s own hens.

The lodge’s beautiful garden is nothing short of an oasis, visited by an abundance of butterflies, birds and other animals. It offers you every opportunity to relax with a good book and some refreshment at the end of an adventure-filled day.

Jaguarundi Lodge

A stay at Jaguarundi Lodge places you in a central location in the small village of Santa Elena in the area by Monteverde’s beautiful cloud forest. Within a short distance, you’ll find everything from restaurants and cafés to small hiking trails. The hotel is known for having its own hanging bridge right in its “backyard”. So you have every opportunity to start the day with a walk straight into the lush nature, which buzzes with life from all the animals in the area.

The lodge consists of wooden cabins built in a rustic style in keeping with the local nature. All cabins have an en suite bathroom and a TV. They all have their own balcony, which is the ideal place to enjoy a quiet moment with a good cup of Costa Rican coffee and a book with a view of the wild nature of the jungle.

Monteverde Country Lodge

The charming Monteverde Country Lodge is set in lush greenery in the small village of Santa Elena in the Monteverde area, best known for its cloud forest. The lodge is within walking distance of many local restaurants and various exciting centres for butterflies, insects and snakes.

All 60 rooms at the lodge are inspired by the original style of the first mountain huts in Monteverde, and are furnished with wooden furniture and decorated in warm colours. They are equipped with cable TV, a telephone, a safe, a coffee maker and en suite toilet and shower. Outside the rooms is a shared veranda, where you can sit and relax in one of the chairs.

The lodge’s restaurant serves both traditional Costa Rican dishes and international cuisine. The restaurant is also where your breakfast (included) is served. You may also be lucky enough to experience live music here, played by local artists while you eat or enjoy a glass of wine. In the afternoon, you can relax with a cup of coffee and a good book in the lodge’s lounge area or in the cosy courtyard with fountains, benches and abundant greenery.

Valle Escondido Nature Reserve Hotel & Farm

Situated on the edge of Monteverde’s nature reserve is the delightful Valle Escondido Nature Reserve Hotel & Farm. The hotel enjoys an elevated position on a scenic natural plot, with a fabulous view of the rainforest and a beautiful valley. A short distance from Valle Escondido, pristine nature trails, an encounter with the area’s many animals and small waterfalls await you.

The simply appointed rooms feature wooden furniture and decorative details from the nature outside. They offer an en suite bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities and a fan. There is free Wi-Fi in the hotel’s communal areas.

The family-owned hotel is run with a view to being sustainable and self-sufficient. Its roof is designed to collect rainwater, which is used to grow vegetables for the hotel’s own restaurant, Farm to Table Escondido. Here, you can, among other things, enjoy your breakfast (included) overlooking mountains and trees. There are a lot of restaurants nearby, but if you wish to remain at the hotel, its stone-baked pizza is well worth a try.

And if you’ve not yet had your fill of experiences for the day, you have every opportunity to take part in everything from yoga to a class about the ecosystem arranged by the host.

Hotel Belvedere

Belvedere is a quiet, cosy family-run hotel that was one of the first hotels in Sámara. The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the lovely sandy beach and a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Sámara, where you will find small shops and cosy restaurants.

It has a total of 22 rooms and 2 apartments. All have a mini fridge, air conditioning, cable TV, a coffee maker and a safe. There is also free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

The hotel restaurant overlooks the beautiful tropical garden, which you can enjoy while having your breakfast served. There are two swimming pools in the more private part of the garden, where you can take a refreshing dip or relax in a sun lounger. You may even be lucky enough to see monkeys, humming birds and iguanas in the garden.

If you’re looking for more adventure, the hotel can arrange activities such as hiking, diving and horse riding.

Hotel Giada

Giada is a small, family-run hotel, located just a few minutes’ walk from the fantastic Playa Sámara beach. It might not look much from the outside, but inside, the hotel is a real oasis offering wonderful hospitality.

Arranged over 2 floors, the hotel has just 24 rooms, all of which have a private terrace or balcony overlooking the lush garden or one of the two small pools. The rooms are brightly coloured and of a slightly older character, but you have everything you need such as a TV, a ceiling fan, air conditioning, a fridge, a safe and your own bathroom.

The hotel adjoins restaurant MaMa Gui, and this is where your breakfast (included) is served. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner and serves an exciting blend of Italian and Costa Rican food.

Giada is the perfect base for relaxation on the beach or a mooch around the cosy, little town. Or simply recline in a sun lounger in the hotel garden and cool off in one of the two small pools.

Montelaguna Boutique Hotel

Montelaguna Boutique Hotel is located in a tropical oasis between two of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches – Playa Sámara and Playa Carrillo.

A relaxed atmosphere prevails here, where you’re guaranteed to feel at one with nature. If you dream of fabulous bounty beach surroundings, you’ve come to the right place. There’s something for everyone here, whether you’re looking for an active beach holiday or you prefer to relax with a good book in the shade of a swaying coconut palm. Just 400 metres from the hotel is the quiet Playa Carrillo, which, with its untouched beauty, invites you to enjoy pure relaxation in picture-postcard surroundings. This is also a haven for locals seeking a peaceful day out with the family. If you walk 500 metres to the other side, you’ll come to Playa Sámara, where you have every opportunity to try various water sports activities such as kayaking, stand up paddle and jet skiing.

Sámara town is located approximately 4 km from the hotel. You can walk there along the beach or have the hotel arrange a taxi for you (around 15-20 USD per way). In Sámara, you’ll find several small shops if you feel like doing a bit of shopping. Otherwise, we can recommend enjoying a refreshing cocktail at one of the cozy beach restaurants and watching the beautiful sunset. You’ll also find a nice selection of restaurants in town.

Please note: The hotel is closed in September and October. If you’re travelling during this period, you’ll be staying at The Hideaway Hotel instead.

Ara Ambigua Lodge

Idyllically located in a tropical rainforest is Ara Ambigua Lodge.

The hotel has 45 rooms, all with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, TV and a private terrace.

Enjoy a meal in the hotel’s rustic restaurant in tropical surroundings, serenaded by birds in the background. Both local and international dishes are served.

Relax in the pleasant garden on a sun lounger by the pool. The hotel also has a children’s pool for little ones.

La Quinta

La Quinta is an eco-lodge built in harmony with its lush surroundings. In 1993 it was an abandoned farm, largely cleared of vegetation. The new owners replanted trees and created habitats for butterflies, frogs, small mammals and birds.

The lodge has 28 rooms, all equipped with air conditioning and hairdryers. Each also has a veranda with a hammock and a rocking chair, from which you can enjoy the tropical gardens and the sounds of the forest.

The restaurant serves international cuisine. Fruit and vegetables are from the lodge’s own gardens.

There is a swimming pool, and guests can also enjoy a relaxing massage in the riverside spa.

Azania Bungalows

Situated a mere stone’s throw from the beautiful Playa Cocles beach and a few kilometres from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the peaceful Azania Bungalows lodge, in complete harmony with its lush Caribbean surroundings.

The lodge’s 10 charming traditional bungalows are surrounded by lush plants and trees, creating a relaxed tropical vibe. Each bungalow can accommodate up to 4 people and has high ceilings for natural air circulation, a flat-screen TV, a mini fridge, a safe, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and an en suite bathroom with hair dryer. Each bungalow also has a private veranda with a hammock, where you can lounge to your heart’s content and enjoy the surroundings.

The cosy, thatched restaurant and bar serves tropical breakfasts, refreshing drinks and Argentinian cuisine combined with Costa Rican ingredients and taste sensations.

Next to the restaurant is the lodge’s swimming pool with jacuzzi in the middle of the tropical gardens. Cool off here after a day of activities or just relax and sunbathe. You can also go down to Playa Cocles and relax on the sand while watching the surfers in the fabulous Caribbean Sea or rent a bike at the lodge and explore the area.

Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín

This delightful eco-tourist hotel is located close to the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens with exotic flowers and trees that attract many different species of birds. The hotel offers fantastic views of the Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Maria volcanoes, and, on a clear day, the Pacific coast.

There is also a swimming pool filled with natural spring water from the volcano. There are 54 rooms, each with a small veranda where you can enjoy the view of the volcanoes and the hacienda. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, safe and TV.

Sueños del Bosque Lodge

Situated amidst the lush surroundings on the outskirts of Los Quetzales National Park is the glorious Sueños del Bosque Lodge, just a stone’s throw from the Savegre River. The lodge is thus the perfect place to explore the nature or simply relax.

The lodge’s 10 bungalows are built of wood and decorated in warm colours with attractive wood panelling on the walls. With two double beds, they can accommodate up to 4 people. They also offer Wi-Fi, cable TV, a fridge, an en suite bathroom with toiletries and a hair dryer, and a small seating area where you can sit and relax. Each bungalow also has a veranda where you can sit and enjoy the lush surroundings.

At the restaurant, you can order traditional Costa Rican dishes and European dishes made from local ingredients while enjoying the views of the lush nature surrounding the lodge. This is also where your breakfast (included) is served.

There are hiking trails around the lodge, which you can either explore yourself or purchase a guided tour and learn more about the flora and fauna in the area. You can also go for a walk on the 80-metre-long hanging bridge just 75 metres from the restaurant, sail on the small lake by the lodge or go horseback riding in the lodge’s grounds.

Holiday Inn San José-Aurola

Holiday Inn San José-Aurola is situated in San José’s historic quarter, close to the Barrio Amón area with its old colonial mansions, which now serve as galleries. You are within walking distance of the National Museum, the Jade Museum and the Mercado Central, where you can shop and dine at small, local restaurants.

All 195 of the hotel’s elegant rooms are decorated in warm colours with comfortable beds and a large window affording views of San José and the mountains on the horizon. All rooms have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a safe, a coffee maker, minibar and an en-suite bathroom with hair dryer and toiletries.

There are two restaurants at the hotel. Tropicana is a buffet restaurant serving both international and local dishes. This is also where breakfast is served (included). Aninga Lodge

A stay at Aninga Lodge puts you next door to the scenic Tortuguero Canal, and close to the popular Tortuguero National Park, which is home to a multitude of animal species.

Located in the heart of the jungle, you can expect a sensory experience, where you can hear the many animal sounds in the background at most times of the day. This makes your stay here in the middle of nature something very special.

The lodge has 33 spacious bungalows, all equipped with ceiling fans and en suite bathrooms with hot water. The rooms are decorated in a tropical style with wooden furniture and colourful prints that harmonise with the lush rainforest right outside your window.

When it’s time to laze, you can jump into the distinctive turtle-shaped swimming pool. You can also visit the lodge’s Aninga Spa, where you can treat yourself to a nice massage (fee payable)

The lodge also has a restaurant where you can enjoy your meals (included). In the evening, a cosy drink or coffee can be enjoyed in the bar area, possibly sharing the day’s experiences with other guests.

Evergreen Lodge

Evergreen Lodge enjoys a fantastic location a short distance from the famous Tortuguero National Park. A stay in this location puts you in the heart of the jungle, giving you ample opportunity to experience the area’s flora and fauna right up close.

The area is considered one of the most exotic in the country and is known for its many animal species found both on land and in the water. Among others, there are crocodiles, monkeys, turtles, frogs and toucans here, which make a visit to Tortuguero something very special indeed.

The lodge has 66 bungalows and rooms with a tropical décor, all rustically appointed with wood and bamboo furniture. The rooms have an en suite toilet/shower, a safe and a ceiling fan, and there is free Wi-Fi in the lodge’s communal areas.

The area offers plenty of opportunity for you to be active and explore its nature. If you prefer to relax at the lodge, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the outdoor swimming pool, a drink at the bar or treat yourself to a massage (fee payable).

Your included meals are served in the lodge’s restaurant, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the canal.

Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge is situated in the heart of the lush jungle at Tortuguero National Park. Located on a narrow piece of land with Tortuguero’s largest canal on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, the lodge offers a unique location.

It has 106 rustic, simply furnished rooms, all with their own toilet/shower, ceiling fan, safe and small terrace overlooking the lush garden.

Tortuguero offers amazing canals, rivers and wetlands, which are home to many exciting species of animals and exotic plants. When you’re not out on an excursion, you can relax in the scenic surroundings of the lodge, enjoy a dip in the pool, go for a stroll along one of the small paths in the area or on the beach, visit the frog pond or just relax and enjoy a drink in the bar.
All meals are served at the lodge’s cosy restaurant overlooking the canal.

Mawamba Lodge

Mawamba Lodge enjoys a unique location between the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero Canals in the heart of the lush jungle of Tortuguero National Park – the journey here is an experience in itself.

The lodge strives to create an experience as close to nature as possible, so there is no TV, radio or air conditioning in the rooms. The 56 rustic rooms are built in traditional Caribbean style with dark wood that blends naturally into the green surroundings. The en suite bathrooms offer a hair dryer and toiletries. There is a ceiling fan and window nets that provide a natural breeze and allow you to listen to the sounds of the rainforest as you fall asleep.

In the lodge’s pool area, you can jump in the water or sit and relax in a sun lounger or hammock. If it’s more adventure you’re looking for, you can explore the green areas where you can spot various bird species and perhaps even monkeys.

During your stay in Tortuguero, your meals are included in the price and they are served as a buffet in the Mambo restaurant, which is located right by the swimming pool. For an additional fee, you can reserve a table at Katonga, the lodge’s floating restaurant, and enjoy your dinner in the middle of the rainforest as you slowly glide down Tortuguero’s canals (reservation required).

Close to the pool area is the Chelonia bar, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink, beer or soft drink. There is also a small coffee shop in reception, where they also have a small self-service library.

Pachira Lodge

Pachira Lodge is located just 5 minutes from the spectacular Tortuguero National Park and right next to the Tortuguero canals, not far from the town of Tortuguero.

The lodge is set on a 34-hectare plot and has 94 rooms. The rooms are decorated in a tropical style with colourful cushions and pictures. All rooms have their own bathroom with hot water. There is a ceiling fan and nets on the windows, which provide a natural breeze in the room.

In the pool area, you can have a refreshing swim in the turtle-shaped pool or relax in a sun lounger and enjoy the lush surroundings. Not far from the pool area is the hotel’s cosy restaurant and bar area, where your meals (included) are served as a buffet.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can purchase experience packages at the hotel, including massage, boat trips and ziplining in the tree tops.

Free Wi-Fi is available in all common areas at the lodge.

Guayabo Lodge

Situated a mere 30-minute drive from the Guayabo National Monument is the charming Guayabo Lodge, set in scenic surroundings overlooking the mountains, valleys, rivers and the active Turrialba volcano. Thanks to its location 1,500 metres above sea level, the lodge not only offers a fantastic view of the area but also pleasant, cool temperatures. It may therefore also be a good idea to bring a warm sweater for the chilly evenings.

The lodge’s 28 rooms all have their own colour scheme and are decorated with folk art that harmonises with the nature around the lodge. Each room has an en suite bathroom with a hair dryer, toiletries and a hot water shower. The rooms all afford views of either Turrialba volcano or the valley.

At the lodge’s restaurant and bar, you can enjoy Costa Rican dishes and delicious cocktails while admiring the beautiful views. This is also where your breakfast (included) is served.

In the afternoon, you can either explore the area around the lodge or relax in the lounge area with a good book. You can also purchase a cookery course at the lodge’s own cooking school, where you learn how to cook a 3-course Costa Rican meal, which you can then enjoy with a glass of wine.
