Hotel Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu is located in the cosy, little town of Aguas Calientes, not far from the historic sacred precinct Machu Picchu, which is just a 30-minute drive away.

The hotel consists of 53 small yet modern rooms – all with an en suite bathroom, a TV and a safe. Free Wi-Fi is available at the hotel.

As the town is so small, most hotels are close to the station and the Urubamba River, which cuts through the town. The hotel has soundproofed windows, but there may still be some noise from both the river and the train station.

The day starts with a nice breakfast buffet in the hotel’s restaurant, so you can replenish your energy stores, ready for the day’s adventure ahead of you.

In the communal area, you’ll find a bar, a small shop and the lodge’s restaurant, where the meals included are served. The food is a mix of international and national dishes, made from locally produced ingredients.
Tea and coffee are always available – even when the restaurant is closed.

If you need a refreshing dip after the day’s exciting excursions, there is a small swimming pool in the lush garden. There is also a pool bar, where you can purchase cold drinks and delicious cocktails.
And why not treat yourself to a massage at the lodge’s day spa?

The lodge is powered by its own generator, which runs from around 07.00-14.00 and 17.00-22.30. All bungalows have LED lamps if you need a light when the generator is turned off.

Wi-Fi is available in the lodge’s communal area when the power is on, but it’s extremely unstable. But hopefully you haven’t come all the way out here to the jungle to be online either – quite the opposite.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion

PUERTO MALDONADO – AMAZONAS

If you’d like a little more comfort on your jungle adventure, we recommend upgrading to the four-star lodge, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion.

The lodge enjoys a unique location between Tambopata National Park Reserve and the Madre de Dios River, and is built on the 819-hectare site of a former cocoa and rubber plantation. The lodge is located roughly 8 kilometres up the Madre de Dios River from Puerto Maldonado.

It has just 25 beautifully appointed wooden bungalows – all on stilts so they don’t get flooded in heavy tropical downpours. The bungalows have good beds with mosquito nets, ceiling fans and en suite bathrooms with hot water, bathrobes and toiletries.

The communal area is on two floors, with the lodge’s bar and restaurant, where your included meals are served, on the ground floor. The food here is really delicious and a blend of national and international dishes with a focus on the use of local produce.
On the first floor, there is a lounge area where you can curl up on a sofa with a book or share the day’s experiences with other travellers. You can also sit up here and enjoy a delicious cocktail, while the sun sets and the jungle’s nocturnal animals and insects get up. You’d be surprised how much natural noise the animals and insects actually make out here.

If you’d like to give yourself that little extra treat, the lodge has its own day spa, NUA SPA, which offers various massages and relaxing treatments.

Wi-Fi is also available in all of the lodge’s common areas when there is power, but it can be very unstable. Enjoy the fact that you’re “offline” in the world’s largest rainforest!

Please note that every lodge in the Amazon has its own jungle itinerary, so if you switch lodges, the itinerary will also change slightly. A detailed itinerary will be sent to you when you book. Below is a brief overview of the itinerary for this lodge:

Day 1: Arrival at the lodge, walk along the lodge’s own trails with a guide, a boat trip at sunset in search of caimans.

Day 2: Canoeing on Sandoval Lake in Tambopata Reserve, looking for the exotic animals and birds of the jungle. In the afternoon, a walk in the treetops on the lodge’s own “canopy walk”. Walk in the rainforest after dark with a guide.

Day 3: Transfer back to Puerto Maldonado.
