Which Latin American destination should I visit at Christmas?

Latin America has summer when we have winter, making many of the Latin American destinations ideal Christmas holiday destinations.

Expect plenty of heat, a lot of sunshine and several interesting Christmas traditions.

Below, you can read about some of our favourite destinations in December and perhaps pick up some ideas for your holiday during the Christmas month. 

Colombia in December

Colombia’s dry season is from December to April, making the Christmas month an obvious time to visit the South American country.

The many sunny days make December perfect for exploring the numerous highlights of Colombia, including the lush coffee region, the charming colonial city of Cartagena and Medellín, the city of eternal spring.

Colombia is actually also famous for its Christmas lights. The city of Medellín boasts Colombia’s most famous Christmas lights. In fact, the Christmas lighting is some of the best in the world, and in 2016, the decoration consisted of 31 million lights!

Round off your Christmas holiday on one of Colombia’s beautiful beaches on the Caribbean coast. Spend Christmas day at the water’s edge, a cool drink in your hand as you look out over the crystal-clear waters.

Costa Rica in December

Costa Rica is known for its good weather all year round – in December, too!

The dry season starts in December and continues until April, although there is still a likelihood of rain, especially on the Caribbean coast, which generally experiences rain throughout the year. On the other hand, the Pacific coast offers lovely weather in December, with very little or no rain at all.

December is therefore a wonderful month to experience Costa Rica’s treasure trove of nature and wildlife: Tortuguero National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio National Park – Costa Rica abounds with lush parks and abundant wildlife. Join one of our individual tours or, if you’re up for it, explore the country by car as Costa Rica is also a great self-drive destination.

Treat yourself to the perfect end to your Christmas holiday on Playa Samara on the Nicoya peninsula or perhaps on the beach at Manuel Antonio.

Argentina in December

December is one of the best months to visit Argentina.

It is hot in the northern part of the country, and Buenos Aires, which is situated in the north-east, is a fascinating place to visit at Christmas. The capital is awash with summer vibes, and the city is an ideal place to treat your senses to Argentinian food and wine, culture and tango.

In the southern part of the country, it may get cold during our summer, but in December, the temperatures are comfortable. Visit beautiful Patagonia and experience the amazing scenery at Los Glaciares National Park and the Perito Moreno Glacier, for example.

As in Argentina, December is also a great month to visit Chile. Combine Argentina’s beautiful nature experiences with more phenomenal nature in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park and the exciting capital, Santiago de Chile.

Cuba in December

Cuba is a wonderful destination for a Christmas getaway if you like the sound of plenty of culture, charming cities, beautiful scenery and relaxation on stunning beaches.

Cuba’s dry season is between November and April, and in December you can expect pleasant temperatures with plenty of sunshine, blue skies and very little rain.

Charming Havana, the beautiful Viñales Valley and the Spanish colonial city of Trinidad. These are just some of the experiences that await you in Cuba. Experience the highlights on a classic tour or on a self-drive holiday. Cuba, like Costa Rica, is a fantastic self-drive destination.

Round off your Christmas getaway on one of Cuba’s many beautiful beaches, such as on the island of Cayo Santa Maria, a recently discovered gem, located on the northern coast of Cuba.

In Africa, you can go on safari in magnificent national parks, experience the Garden Route – a world-famous self-drive route in South Africa, and round it all off with a beach holiday on the most stunning of bounty islands with their white sandy beaches.
