Is this the year you’ll be going on a summer holiday far away from the British summer?

The Latin American countries offer a whole host of exciting experiences. If you’re into nature, relaxation, history, culture or gastronomy, this continent offers a lot of unique sights and attractions!

Which Latin American countries should I visit this summer?

Latin America offers a vast array of destinations that are perfect for a summer holiday.

We’ve selected five destinations that promise summer holiday experiences you’ll never forget.

Peru in July and August

Machu Picchu

Peru is a great suggestion if you’re looking for magnificent summer experiences: Trekking to Machu Picchu, lush experiences in the Amazon or city vibes in Lima are all experiences of a lifetime.

The weather in Peru varies depending on which part of the country you visit.

Machu Picchu is one of the most famous places in Latin America – and you can understand why. An exquisite view greets you on your arrival at the Inca ruin city, making this UNESCO attraction an outstanding experience for nature lovers. In July and August, it is dry season in the area, so you can expect average daytime temperatures of 21–22 degrees and very little rain. Please note, however, that the nights may be cold in July.

If you’re into nature and animal experiences, a trip to the Amazon is also a great experience in July and August. You are most likely to experience dry weather between April and November, but because the Amazon is a rainforest, you should expect a lot of rain, no matter when you visit the area. In the Amazon, you can experience animals such as toucans, parrots and caimans. There are also beautiful tropical trees and beautiful sunsets.

The capital, Lima, is mild in July and August with average daytime temperatures of 18–22 degrees, making this a pleasant time to visit the city. However, there may be clouds and mist created by the weather phenomenon, La Garúa. But this doesn’t take away from sights such as the beautiful baroque church, San Francisco, and the museum of religious art, which are wonderful experiences in the capital.

Peru therefore offers fantastic opportunities during the British summer months.

Mexico in July and August

Playa del Carmen

It’s a formidable experience whenever you visit Mexico. Stunning beaches, delicious food and beautiful sights will undoubtedly be the perfect spices for your summer holiday.

Although July and August are in the rainy season, the rain typically falls in the afternoon, which means that you can absolutely enjoy some lovely days.

Perhaps you can take a well-deserved rest or eat some delicious food when it rains. The average daytime temperature at the coast is around 30–33 degrees, while the capital and highlands enjoy temperatures of between 23 and 27 degrees during the day.

Experience some of Mexico’s many magnificent sights, such as in Mexico City, where the sights range from impressive museums and delicious dining experiences to beautiful churches. Despite its size, the city is truly wonderful.

If you’d like to experience some of Mexico’s biggest cultural sights, you can hardly avoid mentioning a Mayan and Itza ruin city such Chichen Itza. One of the greatest experiences in Chichen Itza is the El Castillo pyramid, which has 91 steps up to the top on each of its four sides.

And you can’t say Mexico without saying beach adventures – and there are plenty to choose from. Head to Playa del Carmen, for example, and enjoy some relaxing days on the white sandy beach with a drink in your hand. If you feel the need to be active, try your hand at water sports such as jet skiing and windsurfing or take a trip to the island of Cozumel – it takes around 30 to 45 minutes to get there – and experience life under the ocean waves.

Mexico is a paradise all year round and the Mexican climate offers great experiences whatever the season.

Colombia in July and August

Bogotá

Fancy having a summer holiday at one of the newer holiday destinations? Then a summer in Colombia is just the thing for you.

The experiences come thick and fast in this beautiful country, including visits to coffee farms, big-city days in Bogotá and colonial vibes in Cartagena.

Colombia generally has a mild climate. Due to its high altitude, the temperature in Bogotá is around 17–19 degrees all year, while Medellín, which is also located in the Andean region, enjoys temperatures of around 26–28 degrees. The Andean region has two periods that offer the driest weather during the year, and one of them is July and August. The Caribbean coast, where Cartagena is located, has a temperature of around 30–32 degrees all year round, but in July and August, it is rainy season in the Cartagena area, where the showers are often brief but torrential.

Cartagena is a little gem by the Caribbean Sea. Explore the city’s unique neighbourhoods, which offer many diverse experiences. You can, for example, experience the cosy atmosphere of Centro, one of the districts situated behind the 13-kilometre city wall.

In Colombia’s coffee region, you enjoy both tasty and picturesque experiences. Taste the delicious Colombian drops while enjoying a wonderful view of the coffee plantations. Besides enjoying these wonderful experiences, you might also see parrots and hummingbirds.

And last but not least, the capital, Bogotá, is wonderful. A bike ride in the city’s streets, especially on Sundays and public holidays, when the streets are car-free, is a unique experience. A visit to the Gold Museum is also a beautiful experience that gives you an insight into the country’s history.

Swap the British summer for a holiday in Colombia, which will undoubtedly leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Ecuador in July and August

the Galapagos Islands

July and August are good months if you would like to experience fascinating Ecuador and the unique Galapagos Islands.

Dry season in the Galapagos Islands runs from July to December. The temperatures in the country are a little chillier during this period than in the rainy season, but still perfect if nature and wildlife are at the top of your wish list.

Visit the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, where the dry season offers sunshine and cloudless skies. Explore Quito’s colonial centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and feel a sense of history.

Cotopaxi is also worth a visit. The months from mid-July to early October are the best months to experience the volcano in clear weather. The volcano is a stunning sight, and the sight that greets you at Lake Limpiopungo in Cotopaxi National Park is just as breathtaking.

If you’re into unique animal experiences, Galapagos is a must. The average daytime temperature of the islands in the dry season is between 24 and 27, while it is 18 to 22 degrees at night. The colder water of the dry season results in nutrients and small fish coming in to the coast of Galapagos. This means that many animals prefer to breed in this season, such as the flamingos which start in August.

Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands offer many wonderful experiences, and July and August certainly promise that you’ll bring a lot of wonderful memories back home with you.

Cuba in July and August

Trinidad

Want to experience the ultimate in Caribbean charm? Then a holiday to Cuba in July and August is ideal, because the carnival is just around the corner.

Although the British summer months are in the Cuban rainy season, this should definitely not keep you away from the beautiful country. The rain often comes in short, but intense, bursts, which are replaced by hot, dry weather.

On the other hand, the country offers some wonderful, colourful experiences, including the carnivals in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Mantanzas, when the Cuban atmosphere seriously comes into its own with main ingredients such as joie de vivre, dance and celebration.

Trinidad is also home to Cuban rhythms with music in the streets every evening. But before the festive evenings get under way, you can put on your walking boots and enjoy Trinidad’s charming old town, where beautiful buildings, wonderful squares and interesting museums stand side by side.

If you want a proper beach holiday, Varadero is a good bet. Spend the days relaxing, swimming or, for example, snorkelling in the turquoise water.

Cuba is a fascinating destination that promises the whole family wonderful holiday memories.
