Choose this tour because…

Over and above samba, Brazil is perhaps best-known for its magnificent cities, delightful beaches and beautiful countryside. This trip gives you the chance to experience the biggest waterfalls in the world – Iguazu – and the lush rainforest that is home to a unique variety of flora and fauna. You cannot help being swept up in the joie de vivre of the local Cariocas in ‘the most beautiful city in the world’ – Rio de Janeiro – which is spread out over the verdant mountains and runs down to the broad, white sandy beaches. Your journey comes to an end in the charming town of Buzios, famous for its excellent shops, culinary treats and, of course, its magnificent beaches that line the bays of the peninsula.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Brazil

Departure day, where you will fly to Foz do Iguaçu with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Foz do Iguazu

At Foz do Iguazu airport, you will be met by a driver who will accompany you to your hotel. Iguazu Falls are not only the biggest waterfalls in the world, they are one of the greatest natural wonders of the world as well. They actually consist of 275 large and small waterfalls. We will experience them from both Brazilian and Argentine sides, as the two perspectives provide very different experiences.

Day 3: Iguazu Falls

On the agenda for today is a half-day trip to the Argentine side of the Iguazu Falls. We cross the Tancredo Neves bridge over the Iguazu river, which forms the border between Argentina and Brazil. A train ride takes us to the biggest of the waterfalls: ‘Garganta del Diablo’ (the Devil’s Throat). From here, we cross foot-bridges to the most impressive section of the falls. We continue our fantastic tour of the falls, following a network of paths and walkways. The rainforest around the falls is home to a unique range of flora and fauna, including orchids, all kinds of birds and giant lizards. As we will be crossing the border into Argentina, you will need to bring your passport with you on this tour.

Day 4: Foz do Iguazu

Today, we will be taking a half-day trip to the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls, which are both broader and more powerful than Niagara falls in North America. We will have the opportunity to view the falls from various perspectives. For example, there is a lift up to a viewing platform that provides a fantastic view down into the Devil’s Throat – enshrouded in the mist from the falls themselves. On the paths, we also have a good chance of spotting the small ring-tailed coati, inquisitively following in our footsteps. Having admired the falls from various vantage points, we return to our hotel.

Day 5: By plane from Foz do Iguazu to Rio de Janeiro

It is now time for you to bid farewell to Iguazu and catch a flight to Rio de Janeiro. At the airport, you will be met by a driver who will accompany you to your hotel that is located close to the famous Copacabana beach. The city is set in a fantastic location by the mountains that line the Atlantic coast.

The rest of the day is yours to do with as you wish: go swimming in the blue waters of the Atlantic, for example, or stroll along the beautiful promenade by the famous sandy beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.

Day 6: Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Botanical Gardens

Today is devoted to a full-day excursion by Jeep to introduce you to the delights of Rio de Janeiro.

The first stop after you have been picked up from your hotel is at Corcovado mountain in the middle of Tijuca National Park – home to the largest urban forest in the world. At the top of this mountain (710 metres above sea level) stands the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer, which is said to watch over Rio. Since its construction, the statue has gradually become the hallmark of the city, and has been named one of the seven new wonders of the world. From the top of the mountain, there are magnificent views out over Tijuca National Park, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, Guanabara Bay, the city of Niteroi, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon and Maracaña metro station – one of the biggest metro stations in the world. Having admired these impressive sights, you will return by Jeep to the foot of the mountain, where lunch will be served.

It is then time to head off to the 396-metre-high mountain called Pão de Açúcar – which means ‘Sugar Loaf’ – another of the city’s high points, in every respect … A cable car will take you to the top of Urca Mountain, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the coast and the nearby small islands. From Urca, another cable car will carry you the rest of the way to Sugar Loaf Mountain, which presents a magical panoramic view of the golden beaches and the stunning location that have earned the flourishing metropolis of Rio de Janeiro the nickname of ‘the most beautiful city in the world’.

The last item on the day’s itinerary is a visit to the Botanical Gardens, which were founded in 1808 by Dom João, King of Portugal. The gardens contain more than 6,000 different plants and trees, including 900 species of palm and 600 types of orchid. They are also home to a host of birds, many of which have grown used to the presence of people and are therefore easier to spot here than in their natural habitat. The gardens feature a fine network of paths and charming areas with fountains, which are popular places to meet and relax for the ‘Cariocas’ – as residents of Rio are known. The visitors’ centre here screens a film that presents the history of the gardens; it also has a gift shop that sells arts and crafts items, as well as souvenirs such as shirts made of bamboo, and bowls made of banana fibre and decorated with pre-Colombian designs.

Day 7: Rio de Janeiro

The day is yours to do with as you wish.

The evening is reserved for a colourful samba show with music and dancing. Before the show, we will enjoy a traditional Brazilian BBQ dinner, and during the show itself we will witness the fantastic costumes and accessories used in the world-famous carnival that is held in Rio every year.

Day 8: Rio de Janeiro

No excursions are planned, so the day is yours to do with as you wish.

However, there are several Rio tours to choose from.

These tours will be conducted in small international groups with English-speaking guides. We recommend that you book these tours from home.

Day 9: From Rio de Janeiro to Buzios

The time has come to head for Buzios, which is located around 180 km north of Rio. The town was once a small fishing port, but has since grown appreciably larger on account of its magnificent location. There are more than 20 beautiful beaches situated all around the peninsula in different and distinctive bays. The French diva Brigit Bardot was one of the first celebrities to discover the town and its wonderful setting back in the 1960s. The town itself is a charming place, with fine shops, tempting restaurants and interesting art galleries. There are no big hotels here, just small, inviting ‘pousadas’ (traditional inns). We will be staying at one of them, the Pousada Pedra da Laguna.

Days 10-11: Buzios

The days in Buzios are yours to do with as you wish. For example, you can simply relax on one of the many beaches, go sailing in the bay, rent a beach buggy – which is a great way to get around – or make the most of Buzios’ many interesting shopping options.
