Palenque de San Basilio (morning)

This tour takes you to the African corner of Colombia, where the first slaves settled after managing to escape from the Spanish colonial power in Cartagena. You will gain an interesting insight into the everyday life that awaited the African slaves when they landed in Cartagena.

Today, the African traditions and language are kept alive in Palenque de San Basilio, something the locals are very proud of. For the same reason, the town is on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

On this tour, you will be invited inside the home of your local guide, where he tells you all about the history and traditions of the town. You make your way around the town and are presented to a local musician who will tell you all about the traditional music and musical instruments, which are an important part of their culture.

The legendary boxer nicknamed Kid Pambelé is also from Palenque de San Basilio, and it goes without saying that you will also walk past his statue.

And you can look forward to lunch here – Palenque de San Basilio is renowned for its delicious food served in the traditional way: on a banana leaf.

The town is around a 1½-hour drive from Cartagena.
