The underground Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá

North of Bogotá is the city of Zipaquirá, where you will find one of Colombia’s main attractions: the spectacular underground salt cathedral of the same name.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral is built in an existing salt mine. There is space for 8,400 people in the cathedral, and the services down here bustle with life. An 18-metre-high cross is illuminated at the end of the cathedral, and walking around down here is a quite unique experience.

Work in the salt mines was both hard and dangerous, so religion played a very important role for the miners. Your guide will tell you all about the history of the mines, the construction project and the 14 numbered illuminated crosses that you encounter on your way down to the cathedral, symbolising the stations of the cross which illustrate the events of Christ’s last journey from his conviction to his crucifixion to the tomb.
