Finca Maresia

Drake Bay

Situated in the middle of the lush rainforest at Drake Bay is the peaceful Finca Maresia hotel, just 1–2 kilometres from the beach and town. The hotel is like a lovely little oasis after a day filled with exciting experiences.

Its eight pleasant bungalows are located on small hills in the middle of the hotel’s hilly landscape and can each accommodate up to 4 people. All have ceiling fans, a safe, mosquito nets over the beds and an en suite bathroom with hair dryers and toiletries. Each bungalow also has a veranda with a couple of hammocks where you can relax after an action-packed day and enjoy the scenic surroundings. You may even be lucky to enough see parrots, toucans, hummingbirds or other exotic birds flying by.

You can also enjoy the surroundings from the lounge area and the restaurant on the large covered veranda where breakfast (included), lunch and dinner are served. Dinner is an experience in itself as the menu includes several dishes which are eaten with the other guests around a large table, offering ample opportunity to talk about the day’s experiences with each other. Please note that dinner must be booked during breakfast and is not included.

Hotel Arenal Montechiari

La Fortuna

The cosy Hotel Arenal Montechiari is set in scenic surroundings and enjoys stunning views of the iconic Arenal volcano. The hotel is just a 5–10-minute walk from the centre of La Fortuna.

Its rooms are primarily made of wood and decorated in natural colours with green hues. All rooms have air conditioning, cable TV and a mini fridge as well as an en suite bathroom with a hair dryer. Each room also has its own small covered veranda with a couple of chairs where you can relax and enjoy the lush surroundings – and perhaps even spot a colourful butterfly or a hummingbird.

Your breakfast (included) is served in the hotel’s covered restaurant, which also offers great views of the green surroundings. Lunch and dinner can also be ordered here. Hotel Monte Real

La Fortuna

Monte Real presents a magnificent view out over the Arenal volcano and enjoys a wonderful location close to the Burio River and a small area of forest where you can see iguanas, squirrels, sloths, frogs, colourful birds and enchanting butterflies. The hotel is just 200 metres from the centre of La Fortuna, with its enticing shops and restaurants.

The rooms are equipped with a TV, facilities for making coffee, air conditioning, WiFi, a refrigerator and a safe. They also have a separate bathroom with a hair dryer, and a terrace or a balcony overlooking the garden.

Hotel Costa Verde has 70 spacious rooms with private balconies, from which you can enjoy the fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and the lush surroundings inhabited by monkeys, among other animals. Please note that the hotel is located on a hilltop in hilly terrain, so there will be quite a lot of stairs between the rooms and restaurants as well as down to the beach (about 700 metres) and the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park (about 2 km). A bus service runs several times an hour to/from Manuel Antonio if you don’t wish to walk there. The ride costs around 1 USD.


Tabulia Tree Hotel & Villas

Manuel Antonio

The charming Tabulia Tree Hotel & Villas is set amidst lush, green surroundings, around a 15-minute drive from the stunning Manuel Antonio National Park and the beautiful white sandy beaches of Playa Espadilla and Playa Manuel Antonio.

The hotel has just 25 rooms, decorated in rustic Costa Rican style with warm colours. This is also where your breakfast (included) is served. In the afternoon and evening, you can order both local and international dishes. In the bar area, you can play billiards or simply relax while enjoying a cold beer, a fresh smoothie, a delicious cocktail or the Costa Rican national drink Guaro.

The hotel has a lovely pool where you can relax or enjoy a refreshing dip.
A shuttle bus runs past the hotel around once an hour, which can take you down to Manuel Antonio town, the national park and the beautiful beaches, if you would rather swim in the sea. The ride there and back is cheap and easy.

Monteverde Country Lodge

Monteverde

The charming Monteverde Country Lodge is set in lush greenery in the small village of Santa Elena in the Monteverde area, best known for its cloud forest. The lodge is within walking distance of many local restaurants and various exciting centres for butterflies, insects and snakes.

All 60 rooms at the lodge are inspired by the original style of the first mountain huts in Monteverde, and are furnished with wooden furniture and decorated in warm colours. They are equipped with cable TV, a telephone, a safe, a coffee maker and en suite toilet and shower. Outside the rooms is a shared veranda, where you can sit and relax in one of the chairs.

The lodge’s restaurant serves both traditional Costa Rican dishes and international cuisine. The restaurant is also where your breakfast (included) is served. You may also be lucky enough to experience live music here, played by local artists while you eat or enjoy a glass of wine. In the afternoon, you can relax with a cup of coffee and a good book in the lodge’s lounge area or in the cosy courtyard with fountains, benches and abundant greenery.

Hotel Belvedere

Playa Sámara

Belvedere is a quiet, cosy family-run hotel that was one of the first hotels in Sámara. The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the lovely sandy beach and a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Sámara, where you will find small shops and cosy restaurants.

It has a total of 22 rooms and 2 apartments. All have a mini fridge, air conditioning, cable TV, a coffee maker and a safe. There is also free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

The hotel restaurant overlooks the beautiful tropical garden, which you can enjoy while having your breakfast served. There are two swimming pools in the more private part of the garden, where you can take a refreshing dip or relax in a sun lounger. You may even be lucky enough to see monkeys, humming birds and iguanas in the garden.

If you’re looking for more adventure, the hotel can arrange activities such as hiking, diving and horse riding.


Hotel Giada

Playa Samara

This cosy little hotel is the perfect base – whether you want to relax on the beach or to explore the surrounding areas. It is just a few minutes’ walk from the stunning beach, and a stone’s throw from the restaurants and shops in the small town of Samara.

The rooms are the epitome of rustic charm, and all have a TV, ceiling fan/air conditioning, safe and hairdryer. All rooms also have a private balcony or terrace.
The hotel has two swimming pools, a restaurant and bar, and the lush gardens are regularly visited by monkeys and colourful birds.

This cosy, little hotel is located on the main street of Playa Sámara, just a few minutes’ walk from the beautiful beach.

Hotel Samara Beach has a total of 20 rooms, all with an en suite bathroom, air conditioning, a fan, cable TV and a safe. All rooms have a balcony or terrace overlooking the beautiful garden or swimming pool. In the hotel’s pool area, you can take a refreshing dip or relax in a sun lounger on the sun terrace.

Breakfast (included) is served in the hotel’s covered restaurant. There is also a bar and coffee shop.

Ara Ambigua Lodge

Idyllically located in a tropical rainforest is Ara Ambigua Lodge.

The hotel has 45 rooms, all with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, TV and a private terrace.

Enjoy a meal in the hotel’s rustic restaurant in tropical surroundings, serenaded by birds in the background. Both local and international dishes are served.

Relax in the pleasant garden on a sun lounger by the pool. The hotel also has a children’s pool for little ones.


La Quinta

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

La Quinta is an eco-lodge built in harmony with its lush surroundings. In 1993 it was an abandoned farm, largely cleared of vegetation. The new owners replanted trees and created habitats for butterflies, frogs, small mammals and birds.

The lodge has 28 rooms, all equipped with air conditioning and hairdryers. Each also has a veranda with a hammock and a rocking chair, from which you can enjoy the tropical gardens and the sounds of the forest.

The restaurant serves international cuisine. Fruit and vegetables are from the lodge’s own gardens.

There is a swimming pool, and guests can also enjoy a relaxing massage in the riverside spa.


Azania Bungalows

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Situated a mere stone’s throw from the beautiful Playa Cocles beach and a few kilometres from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the peaceful Azania Bungalows lodge, in complete harmony with its lush Caribbean surroundings.

The lodge’s 10 charming traditional bungalows are surrounded by lush plants and trees, creating a relaxed tropical vibe. Each bungalow can accommodate up to 4 people and has high ceilings for natural air circulation, a flat-screen TV, a mini fridge, a safe, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and an en suite bathroom with hair dryer. Each bungalow also has a private veranda with a hammock, where you can lounge to your heart’s content and enjoy the surroundings.

The cosy, thatched restaurant and bar serves tropical breakfasts, refreshing drinks and Argentinian cuisine combined with Costa Rican ingredients and taste sensations.

Next to the restaurant is the lodge’s swimming pool with jacuzzi in the middle of the tropical gardens. Cool off here after a day of activities or just relax and sunbathe. You can also go down to Playa Cocles and relax on the sand while watching the surfers in the fabulous Caribbean Sea or rent a bike at the lodge and explore the area.

Cañón de la Vieja Lodge

The lodge is situated in the most beautiful, green and quiet surroundings. The 50 rooms are built from natural materials and all have private bathroom /toilet facilities and air conditioning. In addition to this, rooms also have their own verandas leading out into the garden area.

The lodge features a spa  giving you the opportunity to experience a mud bath in the river, fantastic swimming pool, Jacuzzi, bar and restaurant. The restaurant offers views of a small canyon with suspension bridges. For the more adventurous traveller, you can purchase additional tours such as, zip -lining, rappelling, climbing, rafting and much more at the lodge.


Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín

Rincón de la Vieja

This delightful eco-tourist hotel is located close to the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens with exotic flowers and trees that attract many different species of birds. The hotel offers fantastic views of the Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Maria volcanoes, and, on a clear day, the Pacific coast.

There is also a swimming pool filled with natural spring water from the volcano. There are 54 rooms, each with a small veranda where you can enjoy the view of the volcanoes and the hacienda. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, safe and TV.


Sueños del Bosque Lodge

San Gerardo de Dota

Situated amidst the lush surroundings on the outskirts of Los Quetzales National Park is the glorious Sueños del Bosque Lodge, just a stone’s throw from the Savegre River. The lodge is thus the perfect place to explore the nature or simply relax.

The lodge’s 10 bungalows are built of wood and decorated in warm colours with attractive wood panelling on the walls. With two double beds, they can accommodate up to 4 people. They also offer Wi-Fi, cable TV, a fridge, an en suite bathroom with toiletries and a hair dryer, and a small seating area where you can sit and relax. Each bungalow also has a veranda where you can sit and enjoy the lush surroundings.

At the restaurant, you can order traditional Costa Rican dishes and European dishes made from local ingredients while enjoying the views of the lush nature surrounding the lodge. This is also where your breakfast (included) is served.

There are hiking trails around the lodge, which you can either explore yourself or purchase a guided tour and learn more about the flora and fauna in the area. You can also go for a walk on the 80-metre-long hanging bridge just 75 metres from the restaurant, sail on the small lake by the lodge or go horseback riding in the lodge’s grounds.


Holiday Inn San José-Aurola

San José

Holiday Inn San José-Aurola is situated in San José’s historic quarter, close to the Barrio Amón area with its old colonial mansions, which now serve as galleries. You are within walking distance of the National Museum, the Jade Museum and the Mercado Central, where you can shop and dine at small, local restaurants.

All 195 of the hotel’s elegant rooms are decorated in warm colours with comfortable beds and a large window affording views of San José and the mountains on the horizon. In the heart of San José, walking distance from Plaza de la Democracía, the National Museum, supermarkets and a wide selection of restaurants, is where you will find Hotel Sleep Inn.

The rooms are tastefully appointed in muted colours and all have air conditioning, TV, microwave, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. All rooms have their own bathroom. There is free Wi-Fi at the hotel, and free breakfast is served in the restaurant.

As central as it is, Sleep Inn is a mere 20-minute drive from the international airport in San José, and the hotel also offers ample parking.

Laguna Lodge

Tortuguero

Laguna Lodge is situated in the heart of the lush jungle at Tortuguero National Park. Located on a narrow piece of land with Tortuguero’s largest canal on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, the lodge offers a unique location.

It has 106 rustic, simply furnished rooms, all with their own toilet/shower, ceiling fan, safe and small terrace overlooking the lush garden.

Tortuguero offers amazing canals, rivers and wetlands, which are home to many exciting species of animals and exotic plants. When you’re not out on an excursion, you can relax in the scenic surroundings of the lodge, enjoy a dip in the pool, go for a stroll along one of the small paths in the area or on the beach, visit the frog pond or just relax and enjoy a drink in the bar.
All meals are served at the lodge’s cosy restaurant overlooking the canal.

Mawamba Lodge

Tortuguero

Mawamba Lodge enjoys a unique location between the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero Canals in the heart of the lush jungle of Tortuguero National Park – the journey here is an experience in itself.

The lodge strives to create an experience as close to nature as possible, so there is no TV, radio or air conditioning in the rooms. The 56 rustic rooms are built in traditional Caribbean style with dark wood that blends naturally into the green surroundings. The en suite bathrooms offer a hair dryer and toiletries. There is a ceiling fan and window nets that provide a natural breeze and allow you to listen to the sounds of the rainforest as you fall asleep.

In the lodge’s pool area, you can jump in the water or sit and relax in a sun lounger or hammock. If it’s more adventure you’re looking for, you can explore the green areas where you can spot various bird species and perhaps even monkeys.

During your stay in Tortuguero, your meals are included in the price and they are served as a buffet in the Mambo restaurant, which is located right by the swimming pool. For an additional fee, you can reserve a table at Katonga, the lodge’s floating restaurant, and enjoy your dinner in the middle of the rainforest as you slowly glide down Tortuguero’s canals (reservation required).

Close to the pool area is the Chelonia bar, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink, beer or soft drink. There is also a small coffee shop in reception, where they also have a small self-service library.

Pachira Lodge

Tortuguero

Pachira Lodge is located just 5 minutes from the spectacular Tortuguero National Park and right next to the Tortuguero canals, not far from the town of Tortuguero.

The lodge is set on a 34-hectare plot and has 94 rooms. The rooms are decorated in a tropical style with colourful cushions and pictures. All rooms have their own bathroom with hot water. There is a ceiling fan and nets on the windows, which provide a natural breeze in the room.

In the pool area, you can have a refreshing swim in the turtle-shaped pool or relax in a sun lounger and enjoy the lush surroundings. Not far from the pool area is the hotel’s cosy restaurant and bar area, where your meals (included) are served as a buffet.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can purchase experience packages at the hotel, including massage, boat trips and ziplining in the tree tops.

Guayabo Lodge

Turrialba

Situated a mere 30-minute drive from the Guayabo National Monument is the charming Guayabo Lodge, set in scenic surroundings overlooking the mountains, valleys, rivers and the active Turrialba volcano. Thanks to its location 1,500 metres above sea level, the lodge not only offers a fantastic view of the area but also pleasant, cool temperatures. It may therefore also be a good idea to bring a warm sweater for the chilly evenings.

The lodge’s 28 rooms all have their own colour scheme and are decorated with folk art that harmonises with the nature around the lodge. Each room has an en suite bathroom with a hair dryer, toiletries and a hot water shower. The rooms all afford views of either Turrialba volcano or the valley.

At the lodge’s restaurant and bar, you can enjoy Costa Rican dishes and delicious cocktails while admiring the beautiful views. This is also where your breakfast (included) is served.

According to CNN, this hotel is one of seven resort hotels with the most spectacular views in the world. The hotel is actually located on a mountain side, just 6 km from the Arenal volcano, and thus provides magnificent view of the volcano itself, the densely wooded valley and the small villages.  The resort has 18 pools of various sizes and water temperatures. There are also several restaurants, each serving its own specialities. For example, there is a delicious sushi restaurant.

Other facilities include a large spa and fitness area. All rooms have their own private terrace overlooking the volcano, hammocks, air conditioning, flatscreen TV, WiFi access, telephone and minibar/refrigerator. This is a resort you will want to stay at for ever…


Hotel Lomas del Volcán

La Fortuna

Lomas del Volcán is located in scenic, peaceful surroundings approximately a 10-minute drive from La Fortuna, overlooking the Arenal Volcano.

The hotel has 52 charming wooden cabins spread over 150 hectares of grounds. All of them have air conditioning, a telephone, a safe, cable TV, a mini fridge, a coffee maker and Wi-Fi. In addition, all cabins have 2 terraces, one overlooking the Arenal volcano, the other with direct access to the stunning tropical flower garden.

The hotel has its own nature trail in the grounds, and you can walk the 1.5 km walk and see animals such as monkeys, iguanas and various bird species.

The exclusive Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort is set in lush greenery right by the beautiful beaches of Playa Playitas and Playa Espadilla and affords outstanding views of the crystal-clear waters and magnificent Manuel Antonio National Park.

The family-owned hotel Nammbú Beachfront Bungalows is located on a small hill, just a few hundred metres from the beautiful beach Playa Carrillo. From here, you have a stunning view over Carrillo Bay, with its white, undisturbed sandy beach with turquoise waters and lush green surroundings as a backdrop.

Borinquen Resort has a delightful location in the foothills of the mountains and close to the national park. It has a naturally formed pool surrounded by the tropical forest.
