The tour in short

A tour to Cuba is like a visit to a lost world. Due to communist rule and the American trade blockade, Cuba has been hidden in its own pocket of time. Although Fidel Castro passed away in 2016, and small changes have started to appear in the country, Cuba remains a country all to itself, and simply must be experienced!

On this tour, you visit the charming capital of Havana, which buzzes with life, music and history. From the bustling capital, the tour heads to the “Pearl of the South”, Cienfuegos, with its impressive distinguished and well-preserved architecture.

The tour concludes in Trinidad, which is – if possible – even more charming and pleasant than Havana with its cobblestone streets and gorgeously colourful colonial buildings. In Trinidad, you experience Cuban music and rhythm like nowhere else in the world. Put on your dancing shoes and get on the dance floor with a salsa, or lean back and enjoy the dancing crowds while you enjoy a chilled mojito.

On this tour, you travel around by bus, and you have private accommodation at “casas particulares”. You have some time on your own in the cities, or you can choose to purchase extra excursions from home.

You have the option of extending the tour to include a beach holiday at one of Cuba’s stunning beaches.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Havana

After breakfast, you will be going on an exciting guided tour of Havana’s old quarter, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Put on your good walking shoes, and let the guide take you through Havana’s cobblestoned streets to impressive sites with beautiful old colonial buildings.

On the tour, you will experience the contrast between the newly-renovated and maintained streets and buildings, and the more dilapidated areas, that makes Havana so unique. Highlights of the tour include Plaza de San Francisco de Asís at Havana’s port, the lovely Plaza Vieja, Plaza de la Catedral with Havana’s beautiful cathedral and the city’s oldest square, Plaza de las Armas, where the city museum and the Governor’s Palace are located.

You have the afternoon and evening to explore the colourful capital on your own.

Accommodation:
Day 3: Havana on your own

Today, there are no planned excursions, so the day is yours to do as you please in Havana.

You can either spend the day exploring wonderful Havana on your own or you can choose to buy one of our optional excursions from home.

If you have not yet had enough of Havana’s fascinating history and impressive architecture, we recommend you take a stroll past the former government building, El Capitolio, the beautiful university building or the historic Plaza de la Revolución, which is notable for its monuments commemorating Cuba’s national heroes such as Che Guevara and José Martí. And when in musical Havana, it is almost a must to learn how to dance Cuban salsa to the seductive rhythms

Day 4: Havana – Cienfuegos

After breakfast, you travel by bus to Cienfuegos. The drive takes around 5 hours, so you can sit back in the soft seats and enjoy the Cuban scenery zipping past.

While on the bus, you will find that it is not just other cars and buses that you meet on the Cuban highways. Pedestrians, cyclists, ox carts and horse and carts also share the roads in surprising harmony with one another. And yes, you can certainly find yourself open-mouthed at the sight of the gorgeous old American cars, which are such an iconic part of the Cuban cityscape.

In the afternoon, you reach Cienfuegos, which is also known as the “Pearl of the South”. On your arrival, you will be picked up at the bus station and driven to your accommodation. The rest of the afternoon and evening are yours to do as you please.

Day 5: Cienfuegos – Trinidad

You have the morning to yourself to explore Cienfuegos, or you can choose to purchase a guided tour from home. Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 by a group of French immigrants, and the French touch certainly adds to the city’s unique character. In 1957, the city found itself on the international map when Fidel Castro’s guerrillas, along with a group of young rebels, took over the city’s military base during the Cuban Revolution. However, victory was short lived, as the uprising was quickly quashed by the then dictator, Fulgencio Batista.

Today Cienfuegos is a pleasant city with very well-preserved buildings, and is, for this reason, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An obvious place to see the city’s well-preserved buildings is on the city’s central square, Parque José Martí. The square is surrounded by beautiful monuments and buildings such as Cuba’s only French triumphal arch, the impressive Palacio de Gobierno and the beautiful, well-preserved Tomás Terry Theatre, which bears French characteristics.

You can also go for a walk along the harbour promenade to Punta Gorda, where you can see some of the city’s most prestigious buildings. On the way, you can make a stop at Palacio de Valle, a stunningly beautiful building that looks like something from an Arabian fairytale.

At lunchtime, the tour heads to the charming city of Trinidad, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bus ride takes around 3 hours, and on your arrival, you will be picked up and driven to your accommodation. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to do as you please in Trinidad.

Today’s dinner is included at your casa particular,

Days 6-7: Trinidad

With its colourful colonial buildings, cobblestones and charming plazas and churches, you can’t help but fall in love with Trinidad a little. All the highlights are within walking distance, so get your good walking shoes on and go exploring in the old quarter, where you will find pleasant squares and picturesque buildings, as well as many exciting museums.

In Trinidad, you experience Cuban music and rhythm like nowhere else, and in the evening, there is always music in the streets. At Plaza Mayor, you can find the popular “Casa de la Música” dancing spot, which always has live music. Put on your dancing shoes and get on the dance floor with salsa, or lean back and enjoy the cheerful dancing crowds while you sip a chilled mojito.

If you just want to relax on the beach and maybe take a refreshing dip or two, the lovely Ancón beach is around 15 km from Trinidad.

The days in Trinidad are yours to do as you please, or you can choose to purchase extra excursions from home.

Day 8: Trinidad – Havana

The time has come to say goodbye to Trinidad and head back to Havana – around a 7-hour drive.

You have the rest of the day to yourself to buy those last few souvenirs, or perhaps visit one of Havana’s many attractions. If you didn’t have time at the beginning of the tour, you could for example, learn more about Fidel Castro and his rise to power at the Museo de la Revolución. You could also head to the beach promenade, El Malecón, and go for a stroll along the waterfront, where Cubans themselves come to hang out.

Accommodation:
Day 9: Departure day

Sadly, your Cuban adventure has come to an end, and today you will be picked up from your accommodation and taken to the airport, before flying home to the UK.

Day 10: Arrival back home

You arrive in the UK after an exciting tour of Cuba.
