Otavalo Indian Market

Discover the beautiful Imbabura Province north of Quito, famous for its high volcanoes, picturesque lakes and small villages, where ancient traditions are kept alive. At the famous Otavalo Indian Market, you will see their impressively colourful crafts.

Make yourself comfortable and enjoy the spectacular scenery you pass on the drive to Otavalo. Brief photo stops will be made in the Calderón and Guayllabamba valleys, where you are also allowed to taste local specialities.

You pass both the 5,790-metre-high snow-capped Cayambe volcano and the 4,630-metre-high Imbabura volcano, which Otavalo lies at the foot of.

In Otavalo, you will visit the famous Indian Market, where you can buy the finest hand-woven ponchos, scarves and blankets. The market is open all week, but is biggest on Saturdays. It’s a good, cheap place to buy beautiful souvenirs to take home with you. Of course, it is also OK just to window shop and enjoy the atmosphere of the colourful market.

From Otavalo, you head to the charming town of Cotacachi, which is famous for its leather products.

Before heading back to Quito, a stop is made at the beautiful Cuicocha crater lake, where there are two small islands in the middle of the lake.

Lunch can be enjoyed (at your own expense) at a restaurant in Otavalo.

Remember to bring: Good shoes, a rain jacket, a warm jumper for the afternoon, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and cash if you plan to buy souvenirs at the market.
