Guest in Latin America
It’s great to travel and experience other cultures. But bear in mind that you are a guest in Latin America. By following a few rules, the holiday will not only be a great experience for you, but for the people in the countries that welcome you as a guest, too.
Familiarise yourself with the culture of the country
Wherever you go, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the country’s culture before setting off: What is the etiquette of that country? Are there specific rules about how to behave when visiting ruins, for example?
Show respect to the country and the people you visit. The unspoken rules, courtesy and what we consider “common sense” are probably different to what you are accustomed to in the UK.
Before taking photos
It’s always great to bring some memories home with you to show to friends and family.
On many of our holidays, you get close to the people and where they live. So, it’s always a good rule of thumb to ask people’s permission before taking photos of them. Remember that a smile always helps – and the answer will normally be yes.
Be fair when you shop
When you find a nice bag, some delicious coffee or something else entirely at a local market, it’s always great to get it at a good price.
Most vendors want to earn as much as they as can from their wares – but it’s OK to haggle. Just remember that £1 is worth more to the vendor than to you, so be fair when you shop.
Last but not least: A smile will take you a long way all over the world. It’s a universal language.
We wish you a wonderful holiday in Latin America!
