Why experience Latin America’s culture and history?

The Mayans, the Incas, the Spanish colonists, the indigenous peoples and many, many more besides have helped create the Latin America we know today.

Learn about Latin America’s rich history and discover architectural monuments, temples and ruins that will impress you with a complexity far ahead of its time. Experience the fascinating cultures that the continent has to offer.

You can hardly fail to be impressed by Latin America’s cultural and historical offerings, which are also often found in scenic areas.

Tours focusing on culture and history

Latin America exudes history and fascinating cultures – no matter what tour you choose.

On the tours we’ve included in our “Culture and history” category, you will enjoy cultural and historical experiences to a greater extent than on our other tours, often with sights at UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Discover, for example:

Pre-Columbian cultural heritage in Mexico

Mexico has to be one of the most interesting countries in terms of its historical experiences, and you will experience everything from the Maya and Aztec eras to colonial times here

Chichen Itza is one of the biggest of these sights.

The archaeological site testifies to the impressive community built by the Mayans some 1,500 years ago. One of the highlights here is the 25-metre-high pyramid El Castillo, which, among other things, provides evidence of the Mayans’ astronomy skills. The pyramid is actually constructed as a calendar, marking the year’s two equinoxes. On these two days, when night and day are equally long, the sun creates a snake-like shadow on the pyramid, and the calendar could thus be used to make important decisions.

Inca culture in Peru

Machu Picchu is probably the most famous historical attraction in Peru, but Peru actually has many historical sites dating back the Incas and other eras.

Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire in the 15th century, and you’ll find a good mix of both historical Inca monuments and Spanish colonial architecture here. The Spanish baroque churches and palaces are built directly on top of the traditional Inca buildings.

This weird and wonderful mix provides an exciting insight into the different periods and cultures that prevailed in the mid-20th century.

The Spanish colonial era and revolutions in Cuba

Cuba is a wonderful destination, especially if you’re interested in some of the many testimonies of the Spanish colonial era and Cuba’s more recent political history involving revolutions.

In Havana, for example, you will discover a Cuba which is in many ways stuck in a time warp. You will see the colonial fortifications around the Old Town, which are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you will also see the old American cars in the streets, showing that the city is very much a product of the country’s often turbulent history.

If you really want to experience the Cuban culture up close, you should stay at a casa particular – the Cuban version of a bed & breakfast.

Salvador – Brazil’s first capital

Salvador was Brazil’s first capital (from 1549–1763), and the charming, historic city is known as the place where Brazil was born.

The city was one of the most important cities of the Portuguese empire, and in the old quarter, Pelourinho, you will find many buildings and churches from that time. The city was also a major port for the slave trade from the 16th–18th centuries, so a large percentage of the population has African blood in its veins. The fascinating Afro-Brazilian culture is evident in the food, the music and, of course, in the goods being sold on the street corners.

Charming colonial towns in Colombia

In Colombia, you really get a sense of the influence of the Spanish colonial era in the country, in the city of Cartagena, for example.

Cartagena’s Old Town is surrounded by a massive city wall, which was one of the biggest military fortresses in South America. And the city’s harbour was one of the most important ports in the Caribbean from the 16th–18th centuries, due to its strategic location on the route to the West Indies.

The city also offers a charming mix of colourful colonial buildings, beautiful squares and classic cobbled streets, which were a must for any self-respecting colonial city at that time.

Tiwanaku in Bolivia – the most important civilisation prior to the Inca Empire

Learn about one of the most important civilisations prior to the Inca Empire at the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Tiwanaku in Bolivia. Unless you’re something of a history buff, you probably won’t have heard of Tiwanaku before.

The city started life as a small settlement but gradually grew until its heyday between 500 and 900 AD. It was also one of the most sacred places in the Andean region, visited by pilgrims. The ruins testify to the important role the empire played in the development of the region in the pre-Columbian era.
